LIVING LIFE WITH OPEN HANDS
March 12th, 2010 by Sophie

My daughter and her best friend had the day off school and wanted to go to a bead shop so they could make necklaces. Envisioning them being busy stringing tiny beads all afternoon, while mommy could get in a few minutes of much-needed work, I agreed. Bead stores, however, as opposed to craft stores, can get rather pricey. The girls were given plastic bowls and I told them they were on a tight budget of 4 dollars each. Every fancy bead that caught their eye, was of course way out of their little budget. I asked the manager (with my best pleading eyes), to pleeaaaase help the girls to find something, ANYTHING that would fit their budget, but she gave Read the rest of this entry »

RAINFOREST AND FRIES PLEASE!
March 9th, 2010 by Sophie

It’s hard to understand how much rain forest we all “eat” every single day. Even if you’re not a burger and fries girl, ingredients that are literally eating away our precious rain forests, are likely to show up in your life regardless – even if you’re vegan! A new report has just been released by the Forest Footprint Disclosure about how global business is destroying the rainforest, particularly in the Amazon. The worst offenders are beef, soy, and palm oil. Beef obviously finds it’s way to our fast-food restaurants, soy is largely grown to feed livestock across the globe and palm oil is found in everything from cookies to skin care products. THE LOVELY SANDRA
March 8th, 2010 by Sophie

Congratulations to Sandra Bullock, who is just so down-to-earth and lovely – I’m thrilled for her. I got to see how eco-friendly Sandra is first-hand as she was part of the Oprah Earth-Day special that I did with Julia Roberts in 2008. She had Oprah tour her husband’s Austin Restaurant and also came out with a line of wonderful eco-friendly candles. Last night, instead of having diamonds dripping from her wrists, Sandra wore a gift from the woman she portrayed in The Blind Side, Leigh Ann Tuohy. Leigh Ann asked eco-friendly and (you’ll be soooooooo happy), affordable, jewelry designer Alex & Ani to create a set of expandable Read the rest of this entry »

MOMMY MONDAY: 3 MUST-HAVE MATERNITY PIECES
March 8th, 2010 by Sophie

When budgets are tight, and you want your pregnancy to be Gorgeously Green, it makes sense to splash out on 2 or 3 must-have pieces – all of which, should be able to carry you through that awkward phase between about-to-pop and almost-back-to-normal clothes. My #1 pick is The Wrap by AngelRox (pictured below left). Made out of silky eco-friendly fabric, The Wrap is the most versatile piece I’ve found. It comes in 5 different colors and if I was pregnant, I’d want them all. Also check out the wonderful Read the rest of this entry »

GETTING FRUITY
March 4th, 2010 by Sophie

So I wake up this morning to dog going nuts because door bell is ringing – out I go in fraying robe and bed-head hair to find an enormous box of fruit from The Fruit Guys. I had been looking forward all week to my box, but had totally forgotten about it, so was thrilled be able to unpack my goodies instead of having to deal with the Read the rest of this entry »

BEAUTY PRODUCTS CAN CAUSE PMS
March 2nd, 2010 by Sophie

PMS (pre-menstrual stress), can be toxic in more ways than one. My husband used to count the days when he’d have to tread very, very carefully around the house. The wrong thing said in the wrong tone could have me lashing out in full-fledged attack. I’ve mercifully seen my PMS decrease over the past couple of years, which may be due to the fact that I’ve taken dramatic measures to eliminate as many Xenoestrogens from my life as possible. What is an Xenoestrogren? Read the rest of this entry »

MOMMY MONDAY
March 1st, 2010 by Sophie

Every Monday, I’m going to pick an outstanding Green product or blog about something that might interest all you eco-moms. Today it’s this innovative cardboard furnitue by Green Lullaby. It makes so much sense when you’re figuring out how to create a non-toxic baby/kid’s room as it’s hard to find inexpensive furniture that you can trust to be safe. A lot of kid’s furniture is made out of particle board, which typically contains and off-gasses formaldehye, which is pretty toxic. This adorable furniture is made from recycled corrugated cardboard, which is obviously recyclable. It’s really sturdy and contains a unique non-toxic fire Read the rest of this entry »

WEDDING GOWNS GO GREEN
February 26th, 2010 by Sophie

That white wedding dress you see in the window at a bridal salon has caused so much damage! Not just to the credit card of the bride who over-spends on it, but to the environment! The fabric isn’t organic. It was made in a country that doesn’t practice fair trade. Children did the bead-sewing for a pittance. And in its boat rides and plane flights to reach this artistically-lit bridal gown shop, it stamped out quite a carbon footprint. Who wants a hateful, hurtful wedding Read the rest of this entry »
