Sharon Naylor
July 16th, 2010

If you’re thinking about placing those cute, little one-time- use cameras at each of your wedding guest tables, so that your friends and family can capture all the fun moments at their tables while you’re off mingling and dancing, or catch that priceless moment when your groom is gazing at you adoringly while you’re hugging your new in-laws, you don’t have to worry anymore about whether or not your one-time-use cameras (OTUCs) are eco-friendly! BORN FREE!
Virginia McKenna
June 29th, 2010

I want to introduce a new member of our Dream Team: I feel so honored to have Virginia McKenna, actress and founder of Bornfree to be part of our community. I grew up next door to Virginia and have always looked up to her. She’s an absolute inspiration – a truly Gorgeously Green woman, who has fought all her life against cruelty to animals. Enjoy her blog, it’s very timely as many of may be planning to visit water parks this summer, and we are are entitled to know the truth:

“As a huge fan of all Sophie is doing I am thrilled to have been invited to be on her Dream Team , and have this chance to share my thoughts with you, once in a while. Read the rest of this entry »

TRYING MY BEST!
May 12th, 2010

A few months ago a friend of a friend came over to see my new house. We knew little about each other, except that we would supposedly like each other. I knew that she had a fabulous eco newsletter. She knew I had a trend company and a new book, Modern Girls Guide to Sticky Situations coming out. She came in and it was an immediate love fest. As we chatted Read the rest of this entry »

DOG BREATH!
May 10th, 2010

“Doc, Zoey’s breath is really starting to turn me off, expecially when she wants to kiss me,” The familiar complaint was being directed towards me, a veterinarian, not a marriage counselor.  I  petted the little Jack Russell terrier Read the rest of this entry »

WEDDING GOWNS GO GREEN
February 26th, 2010

That white wedding dress you see in the window at a bridal salon has caused so much damage! Not just to the credit card of the bride who over-spends on it, but to the environment! The fabric isn’t organic. It was made in a country that doesn’t practice fair trade. Children did the bead-sewing for a pittance. And in its boat rides and plane flights to reach this artistically-lit bridal gown shop, it stamped out quite a carbon footprint. Who wants a hateful, hurtful wedding Read the rest of this entry »

BREAST RESCUE
Sharon Naylor
February 2nd, 2010

breasthealth1_selfexam.s600x600With everyone having posted their bra colors on Facebook to bring awareness to the cause of fighting breast cancer, I’m reminded of how lucky I am to be sitting here right now, not on chemo. At age 38, I went for my baseline mammogram and was met with that concerned look from the radiologist. Uh oh. There is a problem. Long, horrible, stressful story short, I had a Stage 0 pre-cancer in my left breast. When the call came in…just a few months after my wedding, my husband and I were devastated beyond words. We just started our Read the rest of this entry »

TRENDS FOR THE NEXT ERA
jane buckingham
January 11th, 2010

Well I wish I could tell you that all the trends for 2010 would have us behaving socially responsibly, perfect global citizens iStock_000011509057XSmalland volunteering with our every free moment…But while there are some wonderful rays of hope not every trend is as positive as we might like! On the upside, we are seeing movement toward not just shop locally but grow your own (is your own chicken next year’s must have item???) and young people returning to a more simple way of life seemingly as a true way of life! So here is a sense of what our next decade has to offer!
Presto Chango: These days there is nothing we can’t trade, swap, or borrow . From baby goods to a couture gown, the last purse we bought to our apartment for a week, just about everything these days that we buy or do is temporary. When you can’t afford to buy it, you might as well Read the rest of this entry »

EAT YOURSELF WELL!
rachel carr
December 16th, 2009

Deep green 1Around this time of year, it is important to remember to nourish our bodies with hearty, organic greens, full of antioxidants and minerals.  This simple kale salad is hearty enough to be a meal on it’s own, but is delicious served with whole grains or soup. This salad also helps to keep your body in an alkaline state, which is vital for a healthy digestive system. Kale really is a super-food that if eaten a few times a week, will really boost your immune system.

HOLIDAY MAYHEM
natasha rizopoulos
December 14th, 2009

Tis the season and sad to say, despite our best intentions we all become a bit crazed.  It’s easy to think that over-consumption and all its corollary suffering is meditatinga recent phenomenon, but lusting after “stuff” and agonizing about our relationship to things has been part of the human condition through the ages.
With that in mind, a brief examination of an old and beloved definition of Yoga.  Simple yet profound, it provides invaluable wisdom for dealing with holiday mayhem, so that the season replenishes rather than depletes.
The concept comes from the Yoga Sutra, a thousand of years-old text, and simply suggests that we practice Yoga anytime we have success in quieting the incessant chatter that tends to clutter our mind and make us manic.   Read the rest of this entry »
