A little bit crafty

I have to admit - I’m getting a bit crafty: my daughter wanted a desk for her seventh birthday on saturday. I didn’t want to spend a fortune and I wanted to be Gorgeously Green, by not buying anything made in and shipped from China. I went to various “used/second-hand” websites and then a friend pointed me some guy who was selling one on ebay for twenty bucks - YEH! My husband picked it up and with a bit of sanding and touch-up paint, it looks almost as good as new. I going to try my hand at stenciling it today - wish me luck because I’m not big on Arts and Crafts, however, I found the stencils in an art store, bought some non-toxic paint and am going to attempt to stencil her name and some flowers. I’ll keep you posted and if it doesn’t look too awful, I’ll post a photograph of it.
I’m so glad that you are all getting on the message board and sharing tips, questions and advice - really cool!
Don’t forget to have a go at this month’s competition - I can’t wait to see your entries!

F.Y.I. We’ve had a bunch of questions about the dress I wore on Good Morning America yesterday - It was made by the wonderful designer Deborah Lindquist www.deborahlindquist.com
She also made the scull & crossbones cardigan that I wore on Oprah - she is super eco-friendly in everything she does, so I recommend saving up for one a her gorgeous pieces - you’ll keep it forever.

Hi Sophie- Your book and website and literally changed my life! I’m sure you’ve heard that before but it truly has. Quick tip on the stencils- instead of buying brand new ones at the craft store (which are usually plastic) just cut some out of paper, cardstock, or cardboard. That way you save money on the stencils and you can recycle them if you don’t plan on using them again. I nannied and taught preschool for 12 years with little to no budget but have always been very crafty (my mom had me into crafts by age 2). Even better yet let your daughter help you; she’ll love to be a part of the project & what a great memory for her!

    Sophie,
Your book has become our household bible!
As a single mom it is not easy affording all of the “green” stuff, but slowly we have gone almost completely organic with our food. I love the clothes on Deborah Lindquist’s site, but where else could I go to buy more affordable organic clothing?

I have tried all of your recipes in the book, and they have all been delicious! Thank you for shining some much needed light into my world or wanting to do everything I can to make the planet healthy again.
As far as the dresser goes, I hope you do better than I have trying to repaint my children’s bedroom walls. We did no VOC paint, and I think I got more on the ceiling and dropped on the floor than I did the wall.

Can’t wait to see your finished dresser for your daughter.
    !Stacy
