ECO-EASTER

I have just seen a horrendous amount of plastic over the past few days - totally unnecessary plastic eggs for Easter, many of which were just tossed in the trash after the kids were done prying them open. I just don’t understand the logic behind putting already wrapped chocolate eggs and candy, into more plastic. I know it’s all about the egg hunt, but you can still hunt for paper or foil wrapped eggs; and it’s surely not about hygiene because the eggs, as mentioned before, are already wrapped. When I was little in England, we got one large chocolate egg each and then we got to run around the yard hunting for little foil wrapped eggs and that was that. So next year I’m going to ask my family and friends not to buy yet more plastic and we’ll do it the old-fashioned eco way.

I detest plastic eggs too. I have some friends who save their plastic eggs and reuse them each year. I’ve also seen friends wrap candies in tissue paper with a bow and then hide those. How about hiding organic boiled eggs? You can even dye them using tumeric or beet juice!

I agree! Besides the additional cost of the eggs, the time it takes to stuff them, then restuff them when they open…..the waste of time and RESOURCES is enormous. My kids color real hard boiled eggs, we hide them, then eat them in sandwiches, custards, etc. We use natural dyes most of the time, from things in the yard and what we have in the fridge already. I really like to limit the amount of sweets I get them anyway; they already get enough from school parties, friends, and other relatives.

We use the eggs for easter hunts but we put them away and reuse them every year.

I reuse my grandkids plastic eggs for seed starters. I place the halves in egg cartons, fill with soil and plant my garden seeds. I use them over and over. They still have to be thrown away eventually but at least they aren’t a complete waste.

I’m just starting out my family, and my ma always reused hers, but now that i am at the point that i will be buying all the things for fun holiday tradtions, i think ill start with this idea. thanks!

I always reuse my plastic eggs and instead of putting smaller individually wrapped candy inside of it We fill them with M and Ms, raisins or nuts. The kids love them and we don’t have the waste from individually wrapped candies.

Naturesflavors.com has organic dyes that can be used for real eggs. Buy your kids candy (or make it)for their baskets, but hide REAL eggs dyed with organic dye… hmmm… novel concept! LOL.

I reuse my plastic eggs each year but instead of candy we put our spare change in them. The kids love to see who got the most change after all the eggs have been found .

New to the GG lifestyle and need some help.
Is there a “correct” type of freezer bag on the market? I’m very much involved with the zip locks and want to phase them out.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks

Yes Yes Yes. Two elementary schools I have had my kids in ask parents to bring in at least 30 plastic eggs filled with candy for an easter egg hunt. 1,000s of plastic eggs just in the school and they are thrown away. I am going to communicate with the school to end this tradition, all the candy is already wrapped!!!

I know about the school easter egg hunt as well. They would require each family to bring a certain number of plastic eggs & they’d write the letters E,A,S,T,E, or R them & have a contest to see who could spell Easter the most times with their eggs. They could easily find a more eco-friendly way to have the contest, with recycled paper, toilet paper rolls, or something. They just don’t think. If we all bring these things to the administrators’ attention, maybe they’ll think twice. We re-use our plastic eggs each year, and the kids love that we put change, M&Ms and jelly beans in them.

I have used my plastic Easter eggs for the last ten years. I have an Easter egg hunt for my grandchildren every year and fill them with small toys or small change because their parents are already concerned about the amount of candy that is around at Easter. When the kids find the eggs and empty their loot into their pockets, they leave the eggs with me for the next year.

When I was little, we’d go to my grandparent’s house to hunt for easter eggs… they colored and hid real honest-to-goodness eggs for us to find! Then make some egg salad sandwiches after the hunt, mmm!

Here in Australia, we dont have plastic easter eggs and i have never heard of such a thing but just to remind alot if theyre not used to it, foil wrapped eggs are fine, here all the eggs are in fact wrapped only by foil and im guessing it would be the same hygienically =]
