Disconnected

Isn’t technology weird: the more connected we are, as we become glued to our blackberries (yes, I have to admit that I succumbed, after saying I never would!), the more disconnected we are becoming.

If I spend an entire day staring at a computer screen, talking on my cell phone and or, checking my blackberry, I feel strangely wired and detached from reality. These miracles of communication are taking us further and further away from a deeper and hugely important connection to the world around us. My husband and I vowed we would never be that couple that indulges in Blackberry- clicking, rather than talking, but its tough, if it’s buzzing away in your pocket, how on earth do you ignore it; my husband came up with a really simple solution: TURN IT OFF! What a relief, with all the gizmos shut down for the evening, we can actually talk, see each other and connect - what a treat!

I think it’s important to have full-on days away from it all, hours to ruminate and dream. I’m going to have a communication-free day once a week - yes that’s going to be my new big thing. I’ll keep you posted!

SHAPE PARTNERS WITH AVEDA FOR RECYCLING PROGRAM
Collect plastic bottle caps and help save hundreds of baby seals, penguins, and turtles

NEW YORK, March 12, 2008¬- This April, Shape magazine will introduce a new column, “Shaping our World, which features a call to action for our readers. It urges them to send or bring their plastic bottle caps from water and soda bottles, shampoo and detergent bottles to Aveda stores to be recycled and turned into packaging for Aveda’s retro Clove Shampoo bottles. This limited-edition product hits stores in September for Aveda’s 30th anniversary. Bottle caps are currently not accepted by the recycling industry and typically end up in landfills or migrate into our waterways and oceans, causing harm to marine life.

In order to expand our commitment to environmental issues, Shape will partner exclusively with long-time advertiser Aveda in the eco-conscious cosmetic company’s latest initiative: the Aveda Caps Recycling Program. With this partnership, Shape and Aveda hope to diminish the vast number of bottle caps that end up harming our environment. This is one of the many ground-breaking initiatives that Aveda, owned by Estée Lauder, has put into place. Aveda continues to be a leader in creating packaging made from recycled material. To find a store location where caps can be deposited click on www.Aveda.com/stores.

According to Suzanne Dawson, Vice President, Global Marketing for Aveda, “Aveda is thrilled to have created an exclusive partnership with Shape for the launch of our caps recycling program. When we considered how to best kick-off the campaign, Shape was a natural choice for us.’ Dawson continued, “The Aveda guest is the Shape reader – someone who is passionate about her own health and that of our planet. With the help of Shape readers and the committed teams in our Aveda Experience Centers, we will keep countless bottle caps from entering the ocean, and endangering the lives of precious marine birds, animals and fish. As Aveda’s 30th Anniversary approaches, we look forward to the launch of our vintage Clove Shampoo – bearing caps created from those collected by environmentally conscious Shape readers.

“Aveda—a long-time partner with Shape—has been paving the road for eco-friendly change since their inception,â€? said Editor in Chief, Valerie Latona. “They’ve been a leader in the sustainable harvesting of beauty ingredients, they’ve been a pioneer in recycled packaging and they’ve been an impetus behind magazines like ours to switch to recycled paper, something we’ve been doing now for years. So when Aveda approached us about joining with them to prevent bottle caps from killing marine life like baby seals, we didn’t even hesitate. This is a cause that we’re now committed to as well.â€?

With a circulation of almost 1.7 million, Shape is the largest women’s monthly lifestyle magazine printed on recycled paper in North America. Each issue uses approximately 916,000 pounds of post-consumer waste, primarily composed of used magazines and newspapers. Annually, that equals more than 11 million pounds of recycled content, enough to fill 250 semi-trucks.

I love that idea of turning off the gadgets for a day! I will try that. A friend of mine has started turning off her cell phone after 6pm to give herself a techo-free evening.
