VANILLA COCONUT SCRUB
May 10th, 2012 by Sophie
This is the most delectable and luxurious scrub I’ve made to date. It is perfect for exfoliating you skin in preparation for a self-tanner and is so moisturizing that you really don’t need to apply any lotion afterwards.
1 16oz jar (You can use a wide-mouthed mason jar.)
1 1/4 cups coconut palm sugar (find it at a health food store and it is so good used in baking too!)
3/4 cup virgin coconut oil (warmed to liquify)
1tbsp unsweetened shredded coconut
1tsp vanilla essence
Simply combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and transfer into your jar. Remember when the coconut oil cools, it will solidify, so you may need to add more if you feel your scrub is too dry or thick. I do recommend waiting until it’s completely cool before adding more. If you decide you want it less dry, stir in another 1/4 cup of warmed coconut oil.
To use, simply scoop out a walnut sized lump of the scrub and rub in all over your bod! If you are giving it as a gift, you may want to tie a small wooden scoop to the jar with a pretty ribbon and label.

FACIAL MIST
April 27th, 2012 by Sophie
I love to use a facial mist, either after I’ve just finished cleansing (in place of a toner) or as a hydrating spritz to carry around with me all day. This particular spray is uplifting, soothing and will give your skin a beautiful glow. I always choose geranium in a spritz because it’s an oil that works so powerfully on our emotions. Feeling depressed? Try some geranium!
1 4fl oz opaque spray bottle
3 fl oz distilled water
2tbsp organic aloe vera juice
15 drops geranium essential oil
10 drops chamomile essential oil
10 drops of ylang ylang essential oil
Mix all the ingredient together in a glass measuring jug and carefully pour into your bottle. It’s best to keep your spritzer in the fridge as it feels so good going on cold, however, you can keep it in your bathroom cabinet for up to one month, as long as it’s not too hot (above 75 degrees F).
Note: Whenever you are making preparations with essential oils, keep in mind you are only using a few drops of oil per recipe. Although the individual bottles of good-quality essential oil can seem pricey, you get an awful lot of bang for your buck when you see how long the oils last (3 years) and how little you need for each recipe. I also try to only recommend oils that I know you’ll use in other recipes too. I recommend purchasing your oils from Mountain Rose Herbs.

VALENTINE MASSAGE OIL
January 30th, 2012 by Sophie
It’s so easy to make your own sensual massage oil, which is more potent than anything you can buy in the store. This is my favorite one:
2tbsp extra virgin coconut oil
10 drops rose essential oil
5 drops ylang ylang essential oil
10 drops lemon essential oil
15 drops geranium essential oil
I highly recommend purchasing your oils from Mountain Rose Herbs.
Heat the coconut oil, until it’s melted. Pour it in to a small glass jar or pot and add the essential oils. Mix with a wooden stick or a teaspoon. The coconut oil will set and slightly harden when cool. Just before use, sit the jar in a cup of hot water to soften.
Note: Your essential oils will keep for up to two years and you can use them for lots of other recipes too – including the Lover’s Bath:
Run a hot bath and add 3 drops of Rose essential oil and 4 drops of Ylang Ylang.

AIR FRESHENER
January 27th, 2012 by Sophie
Conventional air fresheners are the absolute worst when it comes to toxicity – so avoid at all costs! You can so easily make your own powerful spray to deal with all kinds of unpleasant odors. Here’s one of my recent favorites.
You will need:
1 small 16-ounceĀ sprayer
Cheap Vodka
Distilled Water
Bergamot Essential Oil
Coriander Essential Oil
Simply fill your sprayer with 1 1/2 cups water and 1/2 cup of vodka. Add 30 drops of both essential oils.
If you go with a smaller 8-ounce bottle, just half all the ingredients.

Nourishing Hair Treatment
January 21st, 2012 by Sophie
If you hair feels limp and lifeless or looks dull, it might be time for an intensive and nourishing treatment. The good news is that you can easily make it yourself. This treatment is miraculous for your scalp and your hair.
Cedarwood & Rosemary Hair Treatment
4 oz jar virgin coconut oil
25 drops rosemary essential oil
15 drops cedarwood essential oil
Melt the coconut oil by placing the jar in a bowl of very hot water. Pour your melted coconut oil into a smaller (ideally dark,) glass jar. Add the essential oils and mix well. Place a little of the warm oil in the palm of your hand and work into your scalp and then through you hair to the ends. Wrap your hair in a towel and leave for 30 minutes. Use shampoo on hair BEFORE adding water to rinse out oil. Repeat if necessary.
Your hair treatment will last in a cool, dark spot for up to 2 years. Each time you want to use it, warm the jar in hot water to soften the oil.

MINTY MOUTHWASH
September 15th, 2011 by Sophie
I love to save money by making my own mouthwash because conventional drugstore mouthwashes contain alcohol, harsh detergents, artificial sweeteners, dyes etc. This recipe is from my book Do It Gorgeously, and in the book there’s a recipe for a companion toothpaste, which you can easily make too.
You will need:
1 16-oz plastic bottle (an old mouthwash bottle is ideal)
1 cup aloe vera juice
1/2 cup distilled water
1tbsp witch hazel (drugstore)
2tsp baking soda
20 drops peppermint essential oil (make sure you buy pure essential oil. I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs.)
Simply mix all the ingredients together in a glass measuring jug and pour into the bottle. It will keep up to 2 weeks in a cool, dark cupboard.
