Now that we’re heading into holiday season, we tend to use more straws. Over 60 million straws are tossed in the trash daily and because of the plastic that most straws are made out of, they are not recyclable.
My family has, for the most part, given up using plastic straws. When we order takeout or buy lunch from the deli, we ask not to be supplied with straws. It’s much better to ask for a paper cup that can be recycled, or use a glass straw – more on that in a minute!
Also, sucking out of straw habitually can be aging in much the same way that dragging on a cigarette is – watch yourself in the mirror sucking on a thin straw and watch the pronounced lines around your lips – yikes!
However, my daughter does enjoy drinking out of straws, as do I. So, the answer is the genius glass straw by Glass Dharma. These are truly the most beautiful and functional straws I have ever used. They are made from borosilicate glass, which is one of the strongest types of glass on the market. This means that you can microwave, and throw (well maybe not throw,) your straws in the dishwasher. I’ve even dropped one on my tile kitchen floor and it remained intact. They come is a variety of sizes. The thinner ones are great for kids, and I love the fatter ones for the multitude of smoothies that I make. There are 4 different sized so choose from. I also adore the Glass Dharma straws that are decorated with colored glass dots – unique and pretty for dinner parties and lunches.
We are giving away a set of Glass Dharma straws this weekend. All you need do is visit my Facebook page and leave a comment about how you are kicking the plastic habit in your life. I’ll pick the winning comment Sunday evening. Good luck!
