Here’s a perfect idea for a girl’s birthday party. My daughter just celebrated her 10th birthday and so we ordered a Eco-beauty DIY kit, and the girls had a blast. Tweenagers just love to experiment with products, but unfortunately most of the fun/girly products out there contain a plethora of toxic chemicals, which are of particular concern for young girls. The main culprit in many of the products is fragrance, which at first glance, seems fairly innocuous, but truly is a labeling term which needs a little explanation: The term “Fragrance” or “parfum” on an ingredient label can mask over 100 chemicals, which could be harmful to human health. Younger girls, with their growing bodies are particularly susceptible.
It’s really sad because most teens are not allowed to wear makeup and the only thing that they can really experiment with is perfumes and scents, which is why they love stores like Bath & Body Works at the mall. A cupcake flavored lip gloss or cotton candy body lotion may seem like innocent fun, but because of the aforementioned chemicals, I strongly suggest you avoid anything that you don’t absolutely know doesn’t contain phthalates. If in doubt, ask the company or enter the product into the Skindeep Database.
So back to Lola’s party. The Holeco Girls DIY kit is magical and ticked everyone of Lola’s boxes. The girls got to create their own roll-on perfumes, lip glosses, nail art and more. I can assure you that the moms will have just as much fun helping out and seeing the absolute delight that the finished product inspire (no goody bag required.)
After the girls had made their products, I took the whole spa thing a bit further: I mixed together a cooling yogurt and honey mask, which they thought was hysterical, but which I slightly regretted as you can imagine the sticky mess. I then had them lie down with slices of iced cucumber on their eyes, as they listened to music – I tried to encourage some relaxing “spa” music, but Katie Perry and Mr Bieber were the order of the day.
It’s also a really fun idea to create a dainty high tea for the girls – the sort you would find at a high-end spa or resort: tiny cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, heart-shaped ginger cookies, and bite sized fruit tarts.
If you don’t want to buy a full DIY kit, you could also try what I did last year, which was to have the girls make 3 or 4 recipes from Do It Gorgeously. They created Fizzy Bath Bombs, Peppermint Foot scrub and lip balm. The ingredients for these simple products are pretty inexpensive and can be found at your local health food store or Mountain Rose Herbs.
