I go into great detail about food in The Gorgeously Green Diet, however, for those of you just jumping in, here’s a few general tips:
- Decide what you and your family eat the most of and switch that item to organic (dairy, meat, bread etc)
- Look up the produce items that need to be organic, and those that don’t
- Choose local over everything
- Only eat fruits that are in season. If you want produce out of season, best to buy frozen organic.
- Cooking from scratch at home is one of the most eco-friendly things you can do.
- If you’re a meat-eater, consider cutting down your consumption by 25%. Encourage your family to go meat-free for 2 days per week.
- Learn how to cook some great vegetarian recipes (many in The G.G. Diet).
- Store your food in glass, rather than plastic.
- Consider the packaging that all your food comes in.
- Remember there is BPA in many hard plastics and even in the linings of many cans – look for BPA-free food storage items.
- Eat all the colors of the rainbow – green, red, and yellow in particular. Just think a large bunch of rainbow chard will cover all your bases in one go!
- Eat foods that are rich in anti-oxidants – blueberries are a great start
